Archbishop to address MPs and peers on St David’s Day
The Archbishop of Wales will address MPs and peers at a service to mark St David’s Day in Westminster Palace on March 1.
Archbishop Andrew John is the guest preacher at the traditional St David’s Day service for MPs which takes place at the Chapel of St Mary Undercroft at the Palace. It is the first time the service has been held since the Covid 19 pandemic.
Archbishop Andrew says, “It’s a privilege to celebrate the life and ministry of Dewi, Wales’ patron saint, in the Houses of Parliament. We will be joined by politicians across the political spectrum to reflect on the significance of this one Christian whose life and teaching have nurtured Welsh identity for more than a thousand years. We will be praying especially for our political leaders who shape the values and priorities of our nation long into the future.”
The St David’s Day service will be led by the Revd Tricia Hillas, Chaplain to the Speaker of the House of Commons. Children from the London Welsh School will perform a song in Welsh and the congregation will sing Welsh hymns, including Cwm Rhondda. The prayers will be read by Glyn Wise, an ordinand at St Asaph Diocese, and harpist Manon Browning will play the famous Welsh lullaby, Suo Gân. The Bible passages will be read by Fay Jones, MP for Brecon and Radnorshire and Assistant Government Whip, and Beth Winter, MP for the Cynon Valley. Sarah Green MP will read a St David’s Day Hymn. The Archbishop will conclude the service with the blessing and a retiring collection will be taken for Bangor Cathedral Foodbank.
