Award-winning rap artist joins Advent campaign
The award-winning grime artist Guvna B is supporting the Church in Wales’ Advent campaign with a specially-commissioned track based on a single Bible verse.
Guvna B, a prominent Christian who has won two MOBO awards, wrote the rap for the Church on the theme of God turning our darkness into light.
In the track he describes how God’s love turned the lives of two young people around – a woman suffering with anxiety and mental health issues and a man struggling with drug addiction.
The rap was commissioned by the Church in this its centenary year in an attempt to reach out to young people unfamiliar with the Christian message. It has been made into a film by the Cardiff-based Working Word PR agency.
Verse 28 from Psalm 18 was chosen by Guvna B as one which has inspired him in his life:
You, Lord, keep my lamp burning; my God turns my darkness into light.
He says, “This verse means a lot to me because in 2017 I lost my Dad suddenly and my darkness invaded every part of my life. It was all consuming and overwhelming. I just couldn't see a way out but sure enough, God started to show glimpses of light though my family, my newborn son, the people I could help because of my experience of grief and it made me realise something. Even the tiniest candle lights up the darkest room. God is always with us, never forgets us, and will always shine his light on us when we need it.”
The Bishop of Bangor, the lead bishop on evangelism, says, “For Christians, Advent involves preparing for Christmas when Jesus came into our dark world and offered us light and hope. So this verse which Guvna B has chosen fits perfectly with our message at Advent. We are very grateful for his support and we are confident his voice will be able to reach out to those who find it hard to relate to the traditional church and offer them hope in these dark and worrying times.”
