Safety of Rwanda law is ‘neither moral nor practical’ – Archbishop
The Government’s Safety of Rwanda legislation, which was passed this week, is neither ‘moral nor practical’ says the Archbishop of Wales.
In a statement, Archbishop Andrew John warns it sets a ‘dangerous precedent’ to other countries and he calls for policies which protect those in most need.
Archbishop’s statement
I wish to register my ongoing grave concerns about the Safety of Rwanda Bill which has now become law. I appreciate that a strategy is needed to address the issues of increasing migration but believe that this legislation is neither moral nor practical.
At its heart is the abdication of our global responsibility to care for our fellow human beings who are in significant need. We are simply removing the problem and turning our back on those we have a duty to protect. It sets a dangerous precedent to other countries.
We have already, and tragically, seen this week that the policy is not deterring people from crossing the Channel in boats and we fear the loss of life, as well as the appalling practice of people smuggling, will continue, despite this law.
As a Christian leader I urge the Government to direct its efforts and resources to immigration policies which address the smuggling of vulnerable people and which demonstrate compassion, justice and generosity to those who cry out to us for help.
