Prayers: George Herbert (1633), Priest and all Pastors
27 February
Compassionate God,
we give you thanks today for your servant George Herbert,
and for the many gifts and blessings you bestowed upon him.
We especially remember today his contribution to pastoral theology,
giving thanks that he saw the need for a volume of practical advice for clergy
whose formal training had been wholly academic.
We remember George’s love of language,
and his poet’s insight into human need and suffering.
Help us, we pray to practice our theology through reflection on our situations.
Feed our insight with our knowledge of scripture and church teaching,
so that we may respond to life’s challenges informed by your love and truth,
through Jesus Christ our Lord
who gave us his Holy Spirit so that we would not be comfortless. Amen.
Collect 167
King of glory, King of peace,
who called your servant George Herbert
from the pursuit of worldly honours
to be a priest in the temple of his God and King:
grant us also the grace to offer ourselves
with singleness of heart in humble obedience to your service;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
