Prayers: John of Fiesole (1455), Priest and Andrei Rublev (c1430), Monk; Painters
18 February
God of beauty and holiness,
we thank you that in every generation you have raised up artists and iconographers,
who have attempted to communicate something about the mystery of the Godhead through arts and crafts.
We thank you for the works of beauty, holiness and truth
which were painted by Fra Angelico and Andrei Rublev,
which moved people to worship and give glory to you.
As we glimpse your awesome presence in art,
help us to open ourselves to be shaped and moulded by your grace,
for you are the potter and we are the clay;
you are the painter and we the blank canvas;
we are the rough ashlars, and you are the sculptor.
Through Jesus Christ our Lord,
in unity with the Holy Spirit,
the inspirer of all beauty. Amen.
Collect 163
Gracious Father,
who in the mystery of your Word made flesh
have given us a new and radiant vision of your splendour:
grant that after the example of John and Andrei
we may so contemplate your beauty in him
that we may point others here on earth
to those things which pass imagination;
we ask this through the same Jesus Christ our Lord
to whom with you and the Holy Spirit
be honour and glory,
now and for ever.
